What’s it like working as an instructor?

Instructors provide knowledge and skills to prisoners to improve their employment prospects on release. Instructing, training and supervising prisoners in all aspects of work carried out in workshop/work areas, enabling them to meet targets and gain a national recognised qualification* (this only applies to Band 4 Instructor positions)

Production Instructor (Band 3)
Production instructors work in workshops that provide product and services for the prison and commercial companies. Jobs in this role are:
  • Mentor Instructor

Specialist production instructors (Band 4)
Specialist production instructors work in workshops which differ from prison to prison, but may include the following specialisms:
  • Engineering
  • Commerical Horticulture
  • Livestock Control
  • Print and Signs
  • Textiles
  • Waste Environmental
  • Woodwork
  • Laundry
  • Plastic Injection Moulding
  • Concrete
  • TV Repair

Skilled delivery instructor (Band 3)

Skilled delivery instructors work in areas that are responsible for repairs/maintenance, and may include:

  • Grounds maintenance
  • Livestock control
