Welcome to the Probation Service
We are delighted to welcome you to the Probation Service, an organisation with a longstanding and proud history of rehabilitation and public service which stretches back to the late 1800s.
While our history is long, one constant has been our key objective of protecting the public and the core belief the best way to achieve this is by supporting those we supervise to make positive changes to their lives. When this is not possible, taking swift action to return them to court or custody is a crucial part of our duty.
You are joining our team of more than 20,000 people working across England and Wales, all of whom are working day in, and day out, to reduce reoffending, whether you are working as a receptionist in an administration role as a probation service officer or joining us as PQiP learner.
The thread which links all these roles is a belief that people can change if they are provided with hope and opportunity.
Our greatest asset in providing an effective service to victims and those subject to supervision is our staff, and we place a high premium in providing all of you with access to learning and professional development.
We wish you every success in your new role.
Someone like you
You have joined a team of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Working in probation is a career like no other – you’ll gain the skills and insight to protect the public and reduce reoffending. It is rewarding but can be challenging – you often work with people with complex needs. You’ll work directly with people on probation in the community and in prisons to support them to make positive changes. No two people are the same and not everyone will be open to change.
There a few steps further to take that will help you in your new role.
